Know Your Coverage for 2027

A new year can bring changes to your health insurance—even if you keep the same plan. Taking a few minutes to ask these questions can help you prepare for the care, medications, and supplies you need.

Can I keep seeing my doctors?

Check that your doctors, specialists, pharmacy, and supply company work with your plan. Ask whether you need a referral before seeing a specialist.

Will my plan cover my medications and supplies?

Make a list of what you use and check each item with your plan, including:

  • Insulin and other diabetes medications.
  • Your continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and replacement sensors, transmitters, or other parts your system needs.
  • Your insulin pump and ongoing supplies, such as infusion sets, tubing, reservoirs or cartridges, and disposable pods, depending on your system.
  • Your blood glucose meter, test strips, lancets, pen needles, and syringes.

Check the exact brands you use. Ask where you can get them and whether your plan needs approval before paying for them.

Ask whether your supplies are covered through your medical insurance or pharmacy benefit. This may affect where you order them, what you pay, and whether approval is needed. Check each item separately, including your CGM, insulin pump, and ongoing pump supplies.

How much will I pay?

Ask about your monthly payment, what you pay before insurance starts covering costs, and your share of each visit, medication, or supply order. These may be called premiums, deductibles, copays, or coinsurance.

Check the cost of your pump or CGM separately from its replacement supplies. Also ask whether your plan limits how much you pay in a year and which costs count toward that limit.

What about my regular care?

Ask about coverage and costs for diabetes visits, A1C tests, eye exams, and foot care. Find out whether you need a referral or approval before your appointment.

What should I do if my insurance changes?

Share your updated insurance information with CCS before your first supply order under the new plan. Ask whether your doctor needs to send a new prescription or other paperwork. Contact your supply company before you run low to allow time for any approvals.

You do not have to figure it all out alone. Contact your insurance plan with coverage questions and CCS with questions about your supply order. Coverage and supply options depend on your plan and the products you use.
