Skin Infections

The skin is the largest organ in the human body. It protects you from bacteria, dirt, ultraviolet rays from the sun, and it contains the nerve endings for sensation. The skin also plays a key role in regulating the body’s fluids and temperature. A good skin care program can help you avoid the consequences of pressure sores and the resultant pain, hospitalizations, loss of work, and costs.

Tips to Keep your Skin Healthy

  • Avoid soaps labeled “antibacterial” or “antimicrobial”
  • Avoid items that may dry the skin such as harsh soaps
  • Lubricate dry skin with moisturizers or ointments
  • Immediately clean any urine or stool that may come in contact with the skin
  • Avoid using talcum powders which can support yeast growth
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Stop smoking
  • Avoid excessive exposure to the sun and use an effective sunscreen
  • Avoid bumping into things
  • Avoid excessive temperatures, hot or cold
  • Maintain proper nail care
  • Avoid tight fitting clothes, tight shoes or socks that bind (clip top of socks)
  • Wash new clothing before wearing
  • Elevate hands, legs, and feet frequently if you notice any swelling
  • Change clothing as soon as they become wet or soiled
  • Eat a well-balanced diet and maintain adequate fluid intake
  • Keep the skin clean and dry

Health and Wellness Tip

Laugh every day.  It can release endorphins, the healing hormones, and act as the body’s natural pain killer.  Rent a funny movie or call a friend that makes you laugh.  This can lower your blood pressure and boost your immune system.
